herding
Herding is another dog sport that Lappies can compete in. It is restricted to pure bred dogs with herding within their history and to crossbreed dogs with those origins. Herding is where stock is to be moved without aggression through a designated course.
Titles in Herding are:
HIC – Herding Instinct Certificate. This is the entry level and the dog must show interest in sheep. Done on lead the interest could be seen as barking, lunging, following sheep without the intent to injure them.
HT - Herding Test performed off leash while they are in the ring and demonstrate that they can do two changes of direction (move the stock both clockwise and counter clockwise), perform a stop (stop working the stock and either sit, stand or drop) and recall to the handler.
PT – Pre- Trial or Paddock Test. The pen is significantly larger and the dog is expected to show controlled movement of the stock through gates (pegs), change of direction, stop, splitting stock, and finally penning the stock.
There are further titles to be gained in Herding that begin with H, showing that it is herding.eg HSAs Then the level of competence – Start, Intermediate, X for advanced. The level of the course completed – A, B or C and the type of stock used sheep, cattle or ducks.
HCh - Herding Champion is where this high level of competence is demonstrated over multiple times.
